Christopher Blake - Angel at Ahipara

ACD441
£14.99

Details

Inspired initially by Colin McCahon's Northland Panels, the four extended works for strings composed by Christopher Blake between 2000 and 2007 collectively called Angel at Ahipara, took their final inspiration from four iconic photographs from the late Robin Morrison's book The Journey. What is immediately apparent is that Blake has responded to the four Northland black and white photographs with a deeply emotional response - music that, while indisputably of our time, is wrenchingly tonal and completely devoid of obedience to any modern school. Not that it is without influence - there is a patina of Lilburn times, and Sibelius swirls around By Sea from the fourth work Anthem on the Aripara. It is music that makes a considerable impact, and the strings of the NZSO under Ken Young give all four works the sort of international quality of playing and commitment they deserve. With splendid recording quality, and a beautifully produced booklet, this should be in all serious collections. - John Button

“Angel at Ahipara is a handsome package with inspirational performances in a spellbinding setting, thanks to producer Wayne Laird. Included in the booklet are all four Morrison images, as well as generous credits to Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Andrew Sewell for their part in commissioning the works.” William Dart, NZ Herald
