In spite of serious competition from other great baritone voices active then, such as Francesco Valentino, Richard Bonelli, Robert Weede, Igor Gorin, Robert Merrill and Donald Dixon, Warren was to the opera going public at the Metropolitan Opera, New York ‘the King’.
