Byrd
Mass for Four Voices
with the Mass Propers for the Feast of Corpus Christi
Christ Church Cathedral Choir
Stephen Darlington, director
It does appear odd that Byrd would have the inclination, or rather, the liberty to publish settings of the Catholic Mass in the religiously repressed society in which he lived. Byrd’s vast compositional output of Latin works testifies to his overwhelming belief in the Catholic faith. The two books of the Gradualia (1605 and 1607), containing intricately arranged Mass Propers for the major feasts of the year, is by far the largest and most accomplished collection Byrd ever made of his music. It would then seem that his settings in the Gradualia were more of a mediation upon his own beliefs and convictions than any real attempt to provide a practical musical outline for religious foundations.
"... currently one of the finest college choirs in England ... The sound captured at Dorchester Abbey is vivid ... I take special pleasure in hearing this choir." Fanfare
