Rakhmaninov Corelli Variations, Op. 42 Moments Musicaux, Op. 16
Martin Jones, piano
As one of the finest pianists of his day, it is understandable that
Rakhmaninov should also have devoted a fair amount of time to writing for
the piano: in fact piano music spans nearly the whole of his career as a
composer, from the three early nocturnes, written when he was 14 (but
unpublished in his lifetime) to the thorough revision of his Fourth Piano
Concerto which he made in 1941, only two years before his death. And the
main items recorded here - the Moments Musicaux Op. 16 and the Corelli
Variations Op. 42 - neatly represent both ends of his creative life.
