Parry
Symphony No. 1 in G
From Death to Life
World Première Recording
English Symphony Orchestra, William Boughton, conductor
Parry's First Symphony is indeed, in many respects, a remarkable work. The whole symphony, with its cyclic design, is brim full of inventiveness executed with an infectious enthusiasm characteristic of the composer's first period of maturity. In complete contrast with the First Symphony, From Death to Life represents Parry at his most mature. Commissioned for the 1914 Brighton Festival, the symphonic poem was conceived in response to the outbreak of the First World War - an event which shattered Parry's hopes of averting catastrophe.
