Equalisation, Sonata
Equale Brass Quintet
The Nash Ensemble, Lionel Friend, conductor
The Sonata was commissioned by the BBC for the Nash Ensemble of London who gave the first performance on BBC Radio 3 in August 1980. Soon after the Sonata was completed Souster returned to the medium of live electronics in writing Equalisation for Equale Brass. This commission was a result of the participation of John Wallace and John Jenkins of Equale Brass in the first perforamance of the Sonata.
In both the Sonata and Equalisation, and indeed in all of my works, I’ve been trying to create a coherent but flexible musical language in which consonant and dissonant intervals are given equal value. I think music today has reached a kind of plateau: almost anything is possible.
