The Sechs Fugen über den Namen B-A-C-H ( Six Fugues on B-A-C-H ), Op.60 speak a very different musical language to those compositions for which Schumann is now famous. The B-A-C-H motif with its chromatic structure already corresponded more to the 'Neudeutsche Schule' of Wagner and Liszt; the latter followed with his own Präludium und Fuge über B-A-C-H in 1855. The particular appeal of Schumann's Op. 60 Fugues lies in picturing the wild emotional fluctuations of his soul held in check by a purposely 'learned' style ...
