"Boughton's new version seems richer in detail and more powerful in its final impact than the old Marriner recording with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields (Argo, 1/80 – nla), and more atmospherically recorded… All credit to Raphael Wallfisch for his eloquent playing – he must surely have enjoyed Maw's generously lyrical writing. But it's Life Study Studies that has lured me repeatedly back to this disc. The more I hear it, the more impressive it seems. I'd recommend it strongly to anyone whose interest in contemporary British music goes further than George Lloyd."
