Works for Violin & Piano

The A major Violin Sonata was published posthumously in 1851, but was composed in 1817 and most probably performed at the "Schubertiad", the merry evenings of music and conversation shared by Schubert and his friends. The characteristic lyricism and rich harmonic palette reflect Shubert's increased technical assurance in the genre. Nine years later Schubert turned again to the violin - piano combination, composing two works in a brilliant and bravura style, namely the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasie in C minor. Alfred Einstein described these works as substitutes for " the violin concerto which Schubert never wrote."
