Haydn's concertos for violin were all written for the principal violin in Haydn's orchestra, Luigi Tomasini. He was a player of considerable brilliance, a feature reflected in Haydn's compositions for him. Rainer Küchl became Konzertmeister of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1971. He is now Principal among the orchestra leaders.
