The brand new New Zealand World War II opera. Set in the Battle of Monte Cassino, The Juniper Passion expresses the universal experience of war with a uniquely New Zealand perspective. A four year project in the making, Michael F Williams went to Cassino in 2008 to explore the scene and notate the chants from the Benedictine Abbey that have been used for hundreds of years and are contained in the thematic material of the opera.
The libretto is a particularly moving and poignant account of the human experience of the battle and is written by John G Davies, a son of a survivor of the battle and for the last twenty years, a pivotal player in New Zealand theatre and opera.
The booklet contains some original photos from after the battle, not previously published and full libretto.
