The Songs of Roger Quilter

NI5969
£14.99

Details

The songs included on this CD are all settings of words by either Elizabethan or Jacobean poets: a period of literature that has been a prime source for song composers since its creation. The Shakespeare texts – all ‘songs’ from the plays – contain the works that made Quilter’s name, and have largely been responsible for his enduring reputation.

Reviews

"More than 36 songs by Roger Quilter are featured on this Nimbus CD and all most acceptably sung by tenor Nathan Vale, with exemplary and sympathetic piano accompaniments by Adrian Farmer. Quilter, who was born in 1877 and lived until 1953, had a remarkable success with his settings of Shakespeare songs as well as lyrics from the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods from as early, by some of those featured on this disc, as 1905. He came from a wealthy family (his father was a baronet) and never had to earn his living although he studied at Eton. He was generous to his fellow musician colleagues, as well as becoming a founder member of the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund and serving on its executive committee until his death. We are treated to some of the better-known of his 140 or so total output of songs, these being the major part of his musical output and though he did also write a few choral and stage works he was principally a song writer and lyricist. Other songs on the disc include 15 settings from Shakespeare plays as well as other pieces using both Elizabethan and Jacobean lyrics, and the disc ends with the six Julia songs, with lyrics by Robert Herrick. These songs are carefully prepared and performed by our two artists and represent a period, very popular between the wars, which in recent years has somewhat fallen in repute with the musical public. And so this issue is particularly welcome as we are able once again to pay tribute to a really popular song writer. This cd was made at Nimbus’s studios in Monmouth during 2017, carefully produced with clear diction and excellent piano sound as well as printed lyrics for all the songs performed, and is most warmly recommended."-Arthur Francis
