Unexpected Songs - Julian Lloyd Webber

with Catrin Finch, harp
and Pam Chowhan, piano

This concert titled Unexpected Songs is also the title of Julian Lloyd Webber's new CD recorded at Wyastone in November 2005 for EMI. Branching out in new directions, the renowned cellist performs a wide range of music from classical to traditional folk and from film scores to show tunes.

"There is a side to this concert that represents a new departure for me as I believe that the cello is the closest instrument to the human voice. I roamed far and wide while making this selection of music, and the title track was originally number five of the Variations (on Paganini’s A minor Caprice) my brother Andrew wrote for me in 1977. It remains the only piece of music composed by Andrew which does not have words - at least until they were added to Unexpected Song!

Performing alongside me are the "Queen of Harpists", Catrin Finch and pianist Pam Chowhan. The repertoire includes transcriptions of Chopin's Prelude in E minor, Schubert's Serenade, In Haven (Capri) by Elgar, In Trutina from Orff's Carmina Burana, Fauré's Sicilienne, Rimsky-Korsakov's Chant Hindou, Quilter's Music When Soft Voices Die, MacDowell's To a Wild Rose and Hahn's L'Heure Exquise and À Chloris. These works are complemented by renditions of Piazzolla's Oblivion, traditional Scottish, Irish and African songs together with a version of Lady D'Arbanville by Cat Stevens, A Gift of a Thistle from the film Braveheart and Hushabye Mountain from the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I do hope you will join me at Wyastone to share this experience and to celebrate the launch of my new CD."
