Summer Series 2006 - May 26th to July 28th

From ancient times music has been regarded as more than a merely pleasant art. Legend has it that Amphion built the walls of Thebes to the sound of music. In Homer’s Odyssey the hero Odysseus was lured by the song of the sirens. Plato and Aristotle argued that music is a purifying power which creates a ‘calm ocean for the mind’. Pythagoras stated that music allowed for a better understanding and discovery of oneself and one’s capabilities. All these opinions speak to an enduring belief in music’s supernatural power; to encourage contemplation and to arouse man’s intellectual and physical faculties.

The combination of a beautiful setting and great music performed by some of the world’s greatest musicians, will surely elicit all of these emotions. I wish you a memorable summer at Wyastone.

"If music be the food of love play on"

William Boughton, Artistic Director

Dame Felicity Lott - A Tribute to Robert Schumann

Dame Felicity Lott has an international reputation in both opera and recital. This concert, on the eve of the 150th anniversay of the death of Robert Schumann, includes his Gedichte der Königin Maria Stuart op.135 as well as songs by Reynaldo Hahn, Maurice Yvain, André Messager, Noël Coward.

Le Paradis Perdu - Hespèrion XXI

Montserrat Figueras & Jordi Savall are legends in the area of mediaeval and baroque performance. And they continue to astonish international audiences with their scholarship, imagination and virtuosity. In mainland Europe Hespèrion XXI is respected above all others. That they have so rarely play in the U.K. is our great loss. We are thrilled they have agreed to come to Wyastone. It may be our greatest coup so far.

An Evening with Evelyn Glennie

What takes Evelyn a step beyond others is that she combines her superb technical abilities playing an enormous variety of instruments, a profound appreciation of the visual elements of percussion along with her astonishing musicality to create performances of such stunning vitality that they almost constitute a new type of performance. This evening promises to be a special occasion.

Dennis O'Neill

Dennis O’Neill has enjoyed a long career singing the great dramatic roles in opera houses all over the world, and for some years has been unchallenged as this country's foremost Verdi tenor. This recital will include arias from some of the most famous roles in the repertoire, and songs including some rarely heard gems by Franz Liszt, which Dennis has recently recorded for Nimbus Records.

Piano Recital - Angela Hewitt

Angela Hewitt is a phenomenal artist who has established herself at the highest level over the last few years. Her ten-year project to record all the major keyboard works of Bach has been described as "one of the record glories of our age" and has won her a huge following. She has been hailed as "the pre-eminent Bach pianist of our time" (The Guardian)

Jazz Night in the Pavilion - The Alan Gresty / Brian White Ragtimers

After the success of last year's Jazz Night, this year we have a different feel - Dixieland Jazz with The Alan Gresty / Brian White Ragtimers - so prepare to tap your feet. As last year, the evening includes a beautifully prepared dinner. Last year this event sold out within a few weeks of the box office opening, so don't miss out.

These are just a few of the highlights of this year's series - for more information on each of the concerts click on the links below.
