Chopin and Liszt The B minor Sonatas
"His playing recalls an era before pianists heard themselves, when virtuosity meant acrobatics without a net and individuality was the only authenticity ... Despite his expressed feelings about recordings, Mr. Cherkassky has been remarkably well served in them during the past decade." The New York Times

Review | "Shura Cherkassky was 73 when he made this recording in 1985 for Nimbus in Monmouth. He lived another 10 years but this is a lifetime's peak and distillation of skill, feeling and experience. For once, he met a recording company whose philosophy suited him perfectly. Long takes with minimal editing meant freedom of performance for him. In his own words "I can improvise, capture music on the wing. Imagination and even an element of caprice are not frozen out of existence". This is far different from the normal antiseptic snip-snip perfectionist approaches of most recording cos. The sheer beauty, drama and rubato in these performances is rare in the days of cloned, technically perfect but soulless young virtuosi. The all Chopin recital includes a wonderful rendition of the somewhat rarely heard 4 movt. 26 minute Sonata No.3 in B Minor (NOT the one with the Funeral March). Two splendid Mazurkas and 3 lovely, emotional Nocturnes from opuses 27, 33, 62, 63 & 72 follow before his virtuoso finale of the Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise in Eb Op.22 brings what feels like a live recital to a rousing conclusion."-Shura Cherkassky was 73 when he made this recording in 1985 for Nimbus in Monmouth.
