The understatedly elegiac Incantation dates from Thomas’ tenure as professor at the Eastman School of Music, and it traces an arc both calm in its progress and unforced in its eloquence. Written for the violinist Catherine Tait, it was premiered by her shortly before her premature death from cancer, and one might well sense an awareness of the transience of all things in its lyricism.
