Gabriel Fauré: The Two Quartets for Piano & Strings

"It's hard to imagine a better recording of these two glorious pieces. From the first moment the Nash Ensemble catch your attention. They have the essence of this music from first to last. If I single out the rapt stillness of their concentration in the Adagio of the C Minor (first) quartet, it is perhaps simply that this stands out very slightly from the other seven movements here as creating an ambience that very few performers ever achieve in any music. But the quicker music is often superb too, with the delicacy of Ian Brown's touch in the two scherzo movements delivering a wonderful brilliance of effect. No matter what your taste in music, these works performed at this level are an essential part of any civilised collection. I can't recommend them too highly."- N. E. M. Goulder
