After Fallout… takes its title from the British Civil Defence public information films of the 1970’s which I saw whilst visiting the Imperial War Museum in Manchester. These ‘self-help’ style videos gave a bleak and ‘practical’, yet totally unrealistic, guide to surviving a nuclear holocaust. This work opens with a single tone D that unravels into a pulsing five-note chord. From this chord much of the material in the piece is developed. After a short prelude the work picks up speed into a lively, sardonic dance and ends with a brief coda. © Gavin Higgins
