In Dulci Jubilo: Choral Music for Advent & Christmas

Harmonia Sacra was formed by Peter Leech in the Summer of 2009. On Advent Sunday in the same year they presented their first concert at the church of St Thomas the Martyr in Bristol, entitled Advent Reflections. The event has since become a permanent and popular musical feature of the pre-Christmas season in that city. 2019 therefore marks the choir’s 10th anniversary, so this new CD has been created to celebrate a decade of choral music-making in South-West England (and much further afield), and to represent the diverse repertoire of Advent Reflections concerts.

Recorded at the church of All-Saints, Weston-SuperMare, this fascinating collection is well worth investigating by those choral directors looking for new and varied music as we approach the Advent and Christmas seasons. The music has clearly been well chosen, and throughout the singing of this excellent choir is much to be admired. It would be invidious to pick one or two tracks from the 17 which comprise this issue (at just less than 60 minutes duration overall, one might have wished for more music), for they are all of a standard of interest and musical veracity which holds the attention of the listener throughout. Very well recorded, too.

THE ORGAN

All the words from your favourite carols, but unexpected music galore - thanks to interesting

new settings by a varied quartet of composers. Well sung, though the sound is quite close.
