For most amateur pianists and listeners, Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words - written for the domestic market - are indisputably the best-known part of his pianistic output. Six books of these short character pieces, all featuring an attractive melody with idiomatic ‘accompaniment’, appeared during his lifetime, with a further two being published posthumously.
