Rachmaninoff: All-Night Vigil Op.37

Sergei Rachmaninov’s sacred choral music has become some of the best known from amongst the extensive repertoire composed in Russia before its untimely curtailing with the advent of the Revolution in 1917. Rachmaninov’s choral writing is technically both perfect and ambitious, linguistically rooted in tradition yet constantly seeking to renew it, and transcendent in its piercing beauty.

Rachmaninoff: All-Night Vigil Op.37

'Peter Broadbent's brisk approach to tempi certainly helps to emphasise the rhythmic energy inherent in so much of Rachmaninov's writing...With so much of the texture being homophonic, it is good that Broadbent maintains this strong sense of flow. The dynamic range is beautifully calculated, too, aided by the not-too-reverberant acoustic of St Jude-on-the-Hill, London'. Malcolm Riley, Gramophone, April 2014

'...the Nimbus recording, which is beautifully characterized and shaped by Peter Broadbent...' Andrew Parker, International Record Review, February 2014

'I enjoy its refinement and colour in the softer sections, this is fine choral singing and full of passion where the music demands...The Joyful Company of Singers is a cracking group and I admire their honest musicianship, enterprise and energy' Dominy Clements,, December 2013

'There are other Vigils around, but this one is warmly recommended' Choir and Organ Magazine February 2014
