Dr Subramaniam has studied Western classical music, obtaining his Master's Degree in California. He has put his knowledge of both systems to good use as a composer in the field of East - West orchestral composition. In his work, he has happily combined the melodic richness and rhythmic intricacies of Karnatic music with the contrapuntal and harmonic progressions of Western classical music in a unique and successful manner.

Dr Subramaniam has performed widely in India, Europe and the U.S. He has produced nearly 50 recordings, and has been awarded the title of Padma Shri by the Government of India.
