The Bamboo transverse flute occupies a special position in Indian culture. It is associated with the playful and seductive Lord Krishna of Hindu mythology, and in it’s modern form on the concert platform the agility and beguiling tone still charm audiences. Despite its long history and religious association, it was only recently that this vehicle of Krishna’s outdoor dalliances and of all kinds of folk usages became established as an instrument of North Indian classical music, mainly through the efforts of the legendary Pannalal Ghosh (d. 1960). Now the undisputed master of the instrument is Hariprasad Chaurasia, who has performed extensively in India and around the world, including an acclaimed recital at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.
