Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff: Russian Songs

Reviews

"Lyubov Petrova has one of the most beautiful soprano voices I have ever heard. It is sensitive, expressive and eloquent combining a superb voice with unsurpassable technique. It is dificult to find sufficient superlatives to do justice to this remarkable perfection. Whether singing a lullaby or serenade in gentle vein or responding to the greater urgency and power demanded by Tchaikovsky's "Whether Gay Dawns", the whole gamut of emotion is fully under control to the highest standard. Diminuendi at the top of her considerable and secure range are met with the same facility as the imperious crescendo of, for example, that required in Tchaikovsky's "If only I had known better". The line of the voice is totally consistent. Further research is possible on YouTube. Similarly, the variations in pace and power demanded by Rachmaninoff's "These Summer Nights" and "Spring Waters" are dealt with in a totally masterly fashion These Russian songs are very pleasant to hear but gain their interest very much by how they are performed. A badly sung Lied is nothing. As would be expected, Vladimir Feltsman's sensitive piano accompaniment to his compatriot's performance is all it should be. The accompanying booklet gives complete and, indeed, quite poetic translations of each song but to follow each line precisely does require some familiarity with the Cyrillic alphabet. Anyone who responds to vocal excellence must hear this CD."- Jack L. Honigman

"This CD combines songs of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. They are grouped together, the first 11 being by Tchaikovsky and the remaining 11 by Rachmaninov. The voice of soprano Lyubov Petrova is lovely and with very sensitive playing by Vladimir Feltsman make this CD a real must for anyone who enjoys vocal music and lied. The recording balance is excellent. The booklet has full translation into English for each song."- Anonymous
