Ture Rangström’s The Bridal Crown has proven to be one of the most durable Swedish operas, and has been performed in abundance in many different productions across the country. Located in Dalarna in the latter half of the 19th century, it is a kind of Romeo and Juliet story with two young lovers – Mats and Kersti – from families in enmity with each other. The drama itself cries out for music and there is even some melodies created by playwright August Strindberg himself. But then, it was released as an opera by the composer Rangström who created, as it would turn out, an eternally young music drama.

Havin genjoyed the symphonies of Ture Rangström (1884-1947) for their romantic, Technicolor spontaneity – his friends called him Sturm-und-Drangström – I was curious to hear his setting of Strindberg’s Kronbruden (‘The Crown Bride’), premiered in Stuttgart in 1919 and sporadically revived since then in Stockholm as the cornerstone of a Swedish school of national opera which never quite materialized. Now Sterling does the composer proud by issuing this 2017 concert performance from Gothenburg, garlanded with essays, historical photos, full libretto and an English text drawn from a 1910 translation of the extraordinary original play… through Rangström’s four act opera is far from perfect, it is the real deal, alive in the moment, emotionally compelling, and creating a world unlike anything else… Altogether, it’s a great pleasure to welcome Kronbruden to the operatic table.
