This is the disc for all those who relish being scared by ghoulies and ghosties at Hallowe’en. Entering Retrospective’s Haunted House brings you face to face with 26 frighteningly good vintage tracks. They feature many of the major artists attracted to the ghostly theme, from Bessie Smith in 1924 (Haunted House Blues) through to the inescapable Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett in 1962. All-time-great jazz masters include Louis Armstrong (The Skeleton In The Closet), Duke Ellington (Eerie Moan), Artie Shaw (Nightmare), Gene Krupa (Dracula), Jelly Roll Morton (Boogaboo) and so many others. There are memories of the golden age of dance music from such as Ray Noble (Haunted House) and later British bands like Ted Heath (Swinging Ghosts) and Chris Barber (’Tain’t No Sin). Such great singers as Bing Crosby (The Headless Horseman) and Frank Sinatra (Witchcraft) join in the fun, as do ‘folk’ artists like The Kingston Trio (With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm) and Harry Belafonte (Zombie Jamboree). In fact, the range is scary. So next Hallowe’en (or any other time), just knock on the door of Retrospective’s Haunted House – there’s no trick, just 26 vintage treats!

Reviews:

“Here is an infectiously amusing CD - issued by Retrospective - endlessly entertaining the year round, not just on October 31st, embracing as it does early Jazz, British Dance band music, Swing, Jump music, Calypso, Trad Jazz and Rock’n’Roll. What the tracks have in common is of course a central theme of grand spookiness… These 26 tracks are great fun – and not at all scary! You will be all set up to ignore the trick and treaters hammering on your door. Give them a blast of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’s I Put A Spell On You!” Andrew Liddle, Yorkshire Times [read complete review]
